I can't even remember all the quilts that are laying about in various stages of completion. Honestly, there are around a dozen I believe. With stacks of fabric just waiting for their turn to be called "unfinished". It's all they know...poor things! They need to strive for more. ;)

There was a finish this weekend. A very special finish. A four months late finish. But who's counting?
My goal is to donate a quilt to a local NICU every September in memory of my friend, Amber. I don't want to get into it too much...but Amber was a beautiful young woman, filled with light & love that was taken away from her family and friends much too early. Oh, and cancer really sucks. I am refraining from using the curse words that scream in my head when I think about cancer. You're welcome.

This is the second quilt I've donated so far (my friend is actually dropping it off at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario tomorrow for me). The fabric is happy; with trees, turtles, squirrels, cozy sweaters & scarves and playing children.

The photos aren't great, I didn't have too much time with it after it was finished & washed up.
There was bee work to be done! When a package leisurely makes it way through the postal system, it kind of makes you want to jump right in & get sewing when it finally shows up. So much so, that I didn't even worry about messing up someone else's pretty fabric. See what happens when I don't worry?!
It's not awful. But it's far from my version of "perfect" (Definition: Not perfect, but close enough for me, depending on which project I am working on.) After finishing those chevron sections, I realized that I may have picked the worst fabric possible for my star points. (I know, 'what chevrons...?' right?!) This was the only fabric I was to contribute from my stash & if making the star OR the chevron stand out was the goal, I failed. This was completely overshadowed by the fact that these sections did not line up with the corner pieces (which I am in love with, btw). I am still not sure why...! My package was missing in action long enough that Marian sent me another. Dare I try again? (How much extra fabric do you have for this project Marian? Should I send the second package back unharmed? haha)

Immediately after finishing this block, I decided it was the perfect time to sew up this quick little quilt I've had cut & waiting since June. It gave me no trouble whatsoever. Which was nice of it!

That blue star fabric in the center is flannel, as is the backing. All fabrics are from Riley Blake's "All Star" collection. It was approximately 44" square before washing.
I hope it keeps baby M. nice & cozy! <3
That photo with all the chalk board, yeah, LOVE IT. Cut to about nine months ago, one of my bestest friends had a baby girl. I picked out one of my favourite fabric lines & got to work. Then I stopped when my quilt top was almost finished....you know how it goes. The newborn is now closer to being a one year old! (Ouch, sorry to the baby mama, but it's true...) (Also, look away if you want to see it in person first)

Here she is.
I like them.A warm welcome to the new followers I picked up during Giveaway Day (week). Thanks for being here! I try to post once a week, but as you can see, I have been slacking off lately, in quilting & in blogging.

The second month of our Don't Worry {bee} Happy bee has got me going again though...with Hexies!
These are for Chelsea. I'm still trying to decide which method of basting I prefer, so there's lots of variety in these.

I was worried that hand sewing would cause my carpal tunnel to act up but luckily, I've had very little problems with that so far. So I figured I should make some for myself too...! This will be part of a quilt backing that needs finishing up. The back, I know...not an ideal place for such adorableness...

I might be back next week with a quilty finish. You can't make me pinky swear though.

I bought Christina's Retro Flowers pattern a little while ago, when Curves Class was first announced. The quiltalong came at a perfect time for me so I signed myself up! I knew I wanted to test out the pattern a little before jumping in with both feet & making a huge quilt. My leftover 'Pretty Bird' bits & pieces seemed like a good place to start. Not unlike the last time I used these fabrics, they grew on me the longer I worked with them. I had wanted to use up all my Kona Ocean...but when my little test project started to become more, I had to order more fabric! (Such a shame, eh?)

My little machine gave me some trouble during the piecing process...so glad I stuck it out though! I turned my blocks on point & a baby quilt was born. The plan was to use Kona Tangerine for the binding, with a mostly Ocean backing. Well, immediately after making the orange binding, I knew it wasn't going to work for me. It had to be Ocean. I was not about to wait on another order of Ocean, so the backing became a mish mash of all the leftover fabrics from the front.
My 3 year old niece said, "That's so pretty, it's my favourite quilt, how did you make it so fast?" I didn't bother to ask the husbeast on this one.

Is this crazy busy?

I couldn't wait to cut into my Domestic Bliss layer cake, my first ever layer cake! I ordered some Kona solids to coordinate with it, but I ordered them on Saturday, the same day I started cutting...So, they weren't here on time! haha.
As I was cutting & sewing, I was loving it. Ironed, trimmed, stuck them up on the design wall and then....did not like them so much. I slept on it. I like it better now, but it still seems to be just a little too much.
I have eleven more blocks, I could add another row. I could sash them (even though it's not my favourite task!). I could group them in blocks of four & sash those....I just don't know. And I want to go sew them right this second! Still, without solids or any idea what to actually sew together. *sigh*

Thoughts?

Additional info: It is not destined to be a certain size, or live with anyone I know. I just needed the fabric...and will probably try to sell it when it's finished.
April was a little different though. Here's what I've got!

The three quilts alone are a huge accomplishment for me. Throw in a bee block, a couple of pillows & a few small things for my upcoming sale, and I am starting to wonder what I was doing that was working so well for me in April.
Less tv, yes. More coffee, well, yes. The biggest motivator was probably my craft sale. I need deadlines. I need them, so I can slack off & then sew like a madwoman right down to the wire. It's just my style, I guess. Now I know - better plan for another show!?!
Creative title, no?Today I am revealing my Scallops quilt from Rachel's Curves Class.

First, I want to thank all of the people who commented on my Swoon quilt in the last post. It made me all warm & fuzzy to know that those who appreciate these things, think it is nice.
Second...a small list. Baby Swoon, Zig Zag Pips, Pair 'O Pillows, Scallops. These are all cozy things that did not sell over the weekend. Bummer. I will try again this weekend though! If that doesn't amount to much, perhaps it is time to reopen my little Etsy shop. We'll see.

Edited to say: Scallops did sell! Whoo hoo! I have sold quilts before; to friends, friends of friends...never to someone who doesn't know me even a little bit. It's amazing!

Now, Scallops... I love how soft you are. And how you can resemble clouds, or waves.
I had already purchased the pattern & a quilt along was just what I needed. I finished one block. It is a large one, at 24"...but it was still only one. I loved her right away.
With the pattern & fabrics both being so very awesome to start with, if there was something I didn't end up liking with this quilt, it was all on me. So...she sat around for a while, waiting to gain sister blocks to form one massive & glorious quilt. It never happened. She is an only child. She is my Baby Swoon.

Me: Yeah...but then I'm blogging...for reals
So here I am! Only a couple more videos later ;)

Some of my crafty things will be making an appearance at my Aunt's Open Studio & Gallery event. The things that are finished on time, that is.
So the weekend was filled with the hum *clunk clunk* hum of my sewing machine. Yes...it's loud. And clunky. With my walking foot, there is also a *squeak* to join in the chorus. I keep thinking that one of these days it will just collapse into a pile of dust. I mentioned it possibly having suicidal tendencies in a recent post, one of the commenter's made me laugh out loud when she encouraged me to help it along. It would be the humane thing to do....

I finished up these 18x18" pillows yesterday. They are a departure from my normal colour palette but I like how fresh & springy they are. Most of the fabrics came together as a bundle from Etsy & I started sewing with them the same day they arrived in my mailbox.

I used my Retro Flowers templates, because I love them.
Usually, I find myself planning my pattern & fabric choices in advance...with these I just sewed everything up & then moved them around like puzzle pieces to get them how I liked them. It was fun to see how they turned out! *Must remember to do this more often!*

There is a zip hiding in the back. Lately, I have been using this method from Sew, Mama, Sew! (Though I omit the fusible tape & don't pin....I'm dangerous like that!). With everything going on, I wasn't sure what colour of thread to use to quilt them. Last month I won some Aurifil nylon monofilament thread (to non quilty friends: it's invisible) from Laura @ Quokka Quilts. It was the perfect thing for these babies!
Lots of projects still in the almost finished stage & while I don't count this as 'finished', I wanted to show it off anyway!

I decided on changing up the fabric placement a little. Arranged this way, my eye sees the inside pink swirly flower shape first, then I do little figure 8's around the blue & white petals. I have to look to see the original flower shapes & I like that.

I love this pattern. The cutting was not nearly as time consuming as I thought it would be (this template helped a lot!). Sewing the curves (without pins) was fun! The trouble came for me when I was trying to piece everything together. My sewing machine had a hard time handling these thick seams. It got me thinking...if my machine somehow committed suicide via the window, would I magically find the money for a nice new one? Let's just hope nothing bad happens to it for now...
With some advice from
awesome flickr group peeps, my walking foot got me through. Not easily, but well enough.
This little baby will either have more solids added as borders to beef it up, or I will bind it & call it a mini, not sure yet.

I have plans to make a much larger version with the traditional layout (fabric to be determined). I will not tackle it with my current machine though. Guess I better save my <strike>pennies</strike> nickels! (Did you hear, Canada is nixing the penny!)
I am in a bit of a slump. Been getting little things done such as getting binding ready, ironing my latest fabric purchases & emptying the sewing room garbage. Yeah, I am *really* reaching with that last one.

Here's the last real thing I accomplished, 'Scallops' from curves class.

I also made up a pair of potholders, gifted to one of my sisters for her birthday.

Jenny from Jenny Makes Stuff awarded me the Liebster Award!
The Award goes to a deserving blog that has less than 200 followers.

There are actually quite a few small blogs that I follow & a lot of them have already been given this award recently. I hope I am picking blogs that haven't been recognised yet.

Kelsey Creates - I love the pillow she just posted for Pillow Talk Swap 7. Sweet kitties that look like mine always win me over too ;)

Breakfast for Dinner - I found Elena's blog back in October & was swooning over all the Nicey Jane I found there. She recently put together a rainbow swap (it's full now)

Married to a BMW - Jennifer's cute little cross-stitch desserts are adorable! I love the little shamrock for this month! She is also doing the Craftsy BOM ...her blocks remind me that I should get going on mine!

Two Hippos - I found this blog through the Flickr group for curves class. LOVE her ribbon star blocks from a few weeks back.

I am supposed to pick five blogs. The list in front of me has eight other blogs that I could have added as a fifth, if I had been quicker! One was just crossed off this morning...so I only have four.
The Liebster Award has been helping me find a lot of new blogs that I enjoy - I hope you check out the ones I mentioned here :)
One extra day...I know I always wish for extra time, but today doesn't feel like extra. It just feels like a normal Wednesday. It's one extra day before my birthday arrives...keeping me 31 for just a teeny bit longer. That is nice... yay for Leap Day! (I sure turned that around quick, didn't I? hehe)

I still have way more projects on the go than normal. All the fabric I need for finishing has arrived, so that excuse is now gone!
Sparkle - waiting on 5 more blocks, sashing, etc
Aviary 2 - haven't started on the back yet
Baby Swoon - haven't started the back yet
Pips Zig Zag - sandwiched, waiting to be quilted

That is my ironing board. Not that I can iron without moving everything off of it first! Where does the pile go? To the cutting table of course. Then back to the ironing board, etc, etc. It's a vicious cycle!
Where do you keep your quilt tops/sandwiches? I hate to fold mine up, so they get draped here once I need the design wall space for something new. Maybe this is why I prefer to go start to finish on one project!

I am quickly falling behind in curves class. Here is my Scallop quilt so far.

I'm fussy cutting the flower bits. Usually when I try too hard, I suck. So far, this looks like it might work out okay though. Speaking of trying too hard...my seams are not perfect. They are okay. Funny thing is, the best ones are the ones I did when I realised I had 7 mins before Parenthood started last night. Zipped right through them & they are awesome. Sheesh.
Also, if you have not been watching Parenthood, you have been missing out. Truth.
Well, here we are, {work in progress} Wednesday again!
I have a couple of projects that are waiting in the wings with absolutely no progress lately. My Sparkle quilt is one of those as I am waiting on a fabric delivery to continue with it. Baby Swoon is in the same boat.

What I have been decent at is keeping up with my Curves Class projects.
Here is my first improv piece. I made it into a potholder, again, for my sister who likes to cook.
I like it much better than last week's potholder!

My 'Rainbow Road' runner top is finished. I am making it to fit a specific table that my kitties like to sleep on. Here's a peek at the top.

It was a good use of my scraps but I don't find improv curves all that enjoyable. Okay, that's probably not true. I think the scrap usage is the part I'm not liking so much. Although long curves with seams every inch or two, half being pressed the opposite way than I needed them was not fun. The throat plate on my machine is raised in the front, it catches every single seam allowance, pressed towards it or open. Pain.in.my...
I am skipping the Christmas Tree Mini project for now but would like to revisit it later on if I can find a good way to save the tutorial before the blog closes shop. If anyone taking the basics class has a plan for saving all the info, could you please let me know? I would really appreciate it!

Precise curves - I love em! My first two tries I found I was pulling the bottom piece too much, stretching it out of shape. This is when I cursed using that circle fabric. I made up some spray starch & tried again, more aware. Worked much better. I have yet to try the pinning method - honestly, I'm not sure I ever will.
In unrelated news, my Pips Zig Zag quilt is all basted & ready to go! I am trying to hold off on quilting so I can keep up with class, but I'm not sure I can just have it sitting on my ironing board waiting for much longer!

I usually sew like crazy on the weekends & not so much during the week, so I guess that makes sense.
This weekend didn't see me in my sewing room as much as usual, but I do have a few small things to show.

My curves class goodies!

A couple of bibs. Used the pattern for one & traced a bib I own for the other

Also finished my scallop bunting. I made my scallops a little smaller than the pattern & added more. It was my first time making biased binding & that was really not very enjoyable! I would do it again...but only if/when I have to! I will have to take another photo when the bunting finds it's permanent home in the playroom.

It was my little sister's birthday yesterday. We are the same age for about a month! I made her a pot holder. She is into cooking (I am into eating her leftovers!) and often has the family over for dinner. I'm sure it will be used plenty :)

Oh- my Moo business cards came in today! I usually get the minis but wanted to try the bigger (regular) sized cards. I just went with a pre designed graph paper image for the front. I can draw on them with my sharpie, which is sort of awesome! (That block is a bit sloppy...but I love the idea!) The back turned out okay. The colouring is off...but I can live with it. At least I got all my info correct! Edit: Almost got it perfect. Missing a 'to' in my blurb at the bottom there. I knew I should have proof-read it 101 times! I'm sure I would have caught it that last time...
Why do I abandon my 'to do' list and start on something totally unplanned & random & with no place to go*?
My WIP's include more Keyka Lou wallets, Aviary 2 baby quilt, Sparkles top, solstice stars/Craftsy BOM blocks, some prep for Curves Class...this is what I did instead of finishing any of that.

I saw Jeni's tutorial at the Moda Bake Shop on Tuesday. I guess it stuck with me because on Saturday I was tidying up fabric, came across a Pips charm pack & went straight to work! I only had 1 charm pack, so I didn't follow the tutorial - it's the same idea though. My top is 44 x 49".
I've ordered some more grey puppies, scarves & blue play dot fabrics for the backing/binding.

Without all the grey added in, I don't think I would like this top as much as I do. I tried to be a little random in piecing my charms (as much as I could handle!) and after it was all sewn up I saw some squares I would like to move around. Not really used to that! I *did* have to unpick one charm after it was already sewn into a big HST. The puppies were upside down, and that was not cool with me!

There is a local craft show coming up in May and I'll have a table there. A table for sure, not too sure what else will be there, other than this quilt.
*So. I guess it does have a place to go after all. :)

See all that grass? This weather is so unusual. Nice, but it feels wrong. It's February & I live in Canada, so taking outdoor quilt photos without a coat & wearing running shoes is not something I've come to expect! It was really windy, that's why I stuck my top to some warm & natural, to try & help stabilize it a bit. It was whipped around really good out there!

It's almost swing weather!

Linking up my 'finish' to {sew}Modern Monday (I don't think of a quilt top as a finish, but I think it counts for this purpose!) and Manic Monday!
I hadn't looked at these blocks in a while [months] and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I really like them! I remember liking them before, but I guess I forgot how much! It is totally motivating me to get paper piecing some more!

I finished up this top last night. I kind of needed the design wall space, so I figured I should get crackin on it. The corners aren't sewn on in this photo because it was snapped at nap time. I am not brave enough to sew at nap time, it is for cutting & ironing only!

I really love it! Might have to make the backing this weekend, finish it up & get it in the hands of it's rightful owner...she is coming up on 5 months old now, so I am beyond 'fashionably late' at this point!

Well...let's see...I feel like there's lots to update you on this week!
I signed up for the Craftsy Block of the Month. It's free, so I am only going to do the blocks that appeal to me most, or that will teach me something new. They will most likely be made with Modern Meadow & added to my 'summer sampler' quilt, which is turning into a catch all for random blocks!

Yesterday I made it into the Polka Dot Charm Swap! Whoo hoo! I have a few of the fabrics that will be included, mostly the 'Ta Dot' prints. So, I might decide to make a fun little quilt for the playroom. Or possibly just a ton of new bean bags! However they get used up, it's exciting to know all those dots will make it here eventually!

Some progress was made on my Sparkle quilt - too much maybe, as in the quiltalong, we are still piecing the HST's. Oops! I am signed up for Curves Class starting Feb. 1st, so I have been trying to finish up what I can before then. I am not used to having so many projects on the go. My usual style is to make a quilt start to finish & then move onto the next! Having the option of which project to work on is nice, but I worry this way will mean more things sitting unfinished!
Anyway, I have done all I can of my Sparkle until more Kona Med Grey arrives in the mail. Here is a mock up of what I have so far.

I placed what I could finish of the white block over my blue for a better visual

Swoon. Oh Swoon. Here is my one lone block. It is SO large, the next two regularly sized 12.5" blocks I made after it seemed way too small. I measured them to make sure, they just felt tiny by comparison!

The plan was to show you all my Summer Sampler blocks to date, but maybe I will finish off another one tonight & save that post for tomorrow...or Saturday.

You know, the proof!

Swoon. I am really unsure as to how many of these blocks I will do. My 3 yr old niece was looking through my flickr favs of this block & saying, "that is so pretty", "I love that one", "look at those pretty colours!". She basically said every. single. one. was her favourite, and I feel the same way! It confirmed that my original swoon idea of making her a pillow was a good one. It also got me wondering if I should try some hand sewing with her soon...the fabric love seems to be there!
Here is my start. Medium Grey Kona & some Heirloom...

Next up - solstice star #1, ribbon star. Made up with Modern Meadow to fit in with my Summer Sampler blocks from last year. (Missing some background Raffia Kona in this pic, as I forgot to cut it out! Laid the block pieces out like so & thought, "how did I miss those?!"

These are the fabrics I've picked out for my Sparkle quilt. I hope to make it a baby sized (9 blocks) but am starting with these 4 to see how I like it. I believe cutting instructions come tomorrow, so my 1.5hrs of nap time is already spoken for!

I also have to vent just a little bit. My local quilt shop does not carry the types of fabric that I love. It's okay though, internet shopping is good to me! What I would love to pick up locally are things such as Best Press (or something similar, since I don't know the difference yet), an assortment of rulers (a square smaller than 6.5" specifically), fusible interfacing, insul-bright & quilting gloves. That was my list & the shop had nothing I needed. The woman working there told me to check walmart. Um...really? I was a little surprised that 1- she thinks walmart has all this stuff & 2- that she would rather I shop there. (Has anyone in a Canadian Walmart ever seen Best Press on the shelves?)
I wish my LQS was more impressive. It would be so nice to purchase some items in person (no stalking the post office) & in CAD!

Linking up at Freshly Pieced today :)
I've decided that I need to make a Sparkle quilt with some of the Little Apples fabric I bought over the holidays. The large center squares will be perfect to showcase some of the cute little scenes of children playing/trees/turtles. I knew a pattern that would allow me to avoid chopping it all to bits would be best & I think this is it. I will make the baby size & then hopefully find a baby who wants it! It's generally not a good idea for me to make quilts without recipients in mind, they tend to just hang around & look lonely.

The second addition isn't a whole other quilt, thank goodness! Faith of Fresh Lemons is doing tutorials for solstice star blocks. My Summer Sampler quilt [in progress] needs a few more blocks so I can finish it up. I had a couple picked out already, but have not started on them. The completed blocks are sitting in a pile in my studio, gathering dust. I finished them up (um, pretty much...) with the help of Faith & the other bloggers who hosted/taught us how to make them - maybe I need to follow along with these too! You know, to increase the odds of them actually being finished. Maybe I need sewing buddies, even if they are only on the computer & don't even know who I am. I like the push it gives you to get going!
I'm kind of into peer pressure. You should be too.
(Once last year, I apparently thought it was 1999, so there may not be much hope for me)

Here are a couple of little mosaics of 2011's projects. There are more, but my computer died last year & is still hanging around waiting for someone who knows how/if I can recover my photos... but I believe this covers all the quilts.

So far I haven't really done any sewing this month. So strange & I don't like it!

I shortened my little sister's curtains last night. I've sewn up a couple of simple made-from-one-fabric pillowcases. And that about covers it!

I have publicly announced on facebook that I am making another KeykaLou wallet for a family Christmas party prize table, so I better get cracking on that for this weekend.

What I have been doing is signing up left, right & center for quilt alongs & other such things! I am taking Rachel's
curves class that starts in February. I will be swooning along with Katy & approximately 300 others! I have also been wanting to make a sparkle punch baby quilt a la Elizabeth Hartman. So, we'll see how all that goes!

Also this year, I want to:

make a sewing machine cover (finally)

finish my summer sampler quilt, ideally before this summer!

finish the Aviary 2 baby quilt in progress

make more KeykaLou wallets

make Mom's quilt, currently just a pile of fabric

whip up a table topper for my playroom shelf, which will really be a 'cat mat'. Sort of like a mug rug, but bigger, for cats to nap in the window. A cat nap mat!

I am sure there are more projects floating around in my brain (& on pinterest!), but for now, this seems like plenty to start! I hope that need to sew every night kicks in soon.

In reality, the Christmas gifts I worked on for weeks only amounted to one quilt & five Keyka Lou wallets, one of which was for myself!
I am happy with my finishes though, I am such a procrastinator - it really is something that there are finishes to speak of.

Here are a couple shots of all the pouches together. I added a strap to the one for my 3 year old niece as I think that will make it easier for her to carry around. The polka dot wallet is for my almost 10 yr old niece, there's a D-ring in case she would like a little wrist strap added. I don't have any clips on hand but need to order some more.

The original two I had planned to make are for a couple of my sisters. I thought it might come in handy to have a basic sewing kit for things like loose buttons or a seam that has pulled apart. I am always here to help with that sort of thing, but I have ulterior motives! It would be so nice for someone else in the family to catch the sewing bug! You never know, right?!

The quilt I managed to finish up on Christmas Eve day is for my 4 month old nephew. The very first nephew on my side of the family! Not his first quilt though, < this quilt > was made by big sister Miranda before he made his appearance.
I used the line "Alphabet Soup" because I love the cute little zoo animal prints & the fact that the rest of the line wasn't too busy. It is colourful though, which I knew my sister would like.

I think Baby Miles likes it too! I forgot to measure it after all was said & done, but I believe it is around 50x50"
My to-do list has never been longer & I was out for pretty much the whole week! Grr. I managed to finish one more Keyka Lou wallet for my niece. She is too young to read, but I am going to keep it a secret until after Christmas anyway. So I have 4 more of those left to make (if you are paying close attention, you will notice that I added one more to the list!)

The Aviary 2 quilt on my design wall has not moved. Which is okay, it doesn't *have* to be done in time for Christmas, and I am really enjoying having it displayed up there for now. Does anyone else go across the hall before bed, open the door to the studio, block the kitty from sneaking in with your foot & just take one last look at their design wall before bed? And then when your husband asks what you are doing, you say, "Just making sure I unplugged the iron..."? No? Me neither.

I have had a very happy mail week! My Heather Ross Studio Sale items arrived on Tuesday...and my order from www.sewfreshfabrics.etsy.com was in today! Happy Happy! Included was this Little Apples stack! (I went a little nuts with a flat rate shipping of $5 to Canada, couldn't resist!)

So, I am feeling almost better & ready to get going on what is left to finish. I should be okay as long as I don't get distracted. [That would never happen to me.]

The bootlegs from my September Pearl Jam concerts are in my cd player right now too. If I can't relive the shows via time machine, these are the next best thing! And they will totally lure me to my studio. Win-win!

I leave you with one of my favourite photos from the front row. Love these guys!
